What is Cable?

A cable is a metallic conductor wire coated with an insulating material used to transmit electric current. One or more wires are coated with an insulating material. Conductors can be single copper or aluminum wires or braided wires made of thinner wires. Aluminum cables require a diameter 1/2 larger than copper cables to carry the same amount of current. Therefore, copper cables are used where space is limited. Aluminum is primarily preferred for overhead lines that are not very heavy. If greater strength is required, cables are reinforced with steel braid. These are primarily used for long lines running high in the air, such as nationwide high-voltage power lines. The strength required of a cable depends on its ability to support both its own weight and the additional weight of ice or snow that will freeze onto it. Furthermore, wind-induced tension must be factored into this force.
